Baby Jogger City Mini Stroller Review

Captures the Essence of Urban Trends

Celebrities love a Baby Jogger City Mini stroller; discover why this amazing lightweight is so popular.

Over the years around my neighborhood, I kept seeing more and more of these stylish lightweight strollers. What are they? Luckily it's clearly marked on the side of the stroller, 'City Mini' and I knew I had to learn more about them, because these have clearly been a favorite standby.

I've seen Baby Jogger City Mini strollers, both double and single, featured on online celebrity gossip websites. Famous people like Naomi Watts, Toby Maguire, Matthew McConaughey, Salma Hayek, Tori Spelling, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry and Laurence Fishburne have all had their babies and young children riding in style in their City Minis.

Why should I choose a City Mini?

For one thing, the City Mini is so well designed that hit has won several awards. Baby Jogger has been honored with a NAPPA Gold Award, Mother and Baby Award and iParenting Media Award for the City Mini model. If you're curious about these awards and what they mean, visit the Baby Jogger awards page. It basically means that you are getting a fabulous stroller!

In addition to all the features parents have loved for years, Baby Jogger is always improving and upgrading the City Mini; tweaks here and there, and sometimes major revamps. You'll discover what all these features are and how your life will be much easier with baby in tow.

What's the seat like?

Baby Jogger has always had great seats  and the City Mini consistently has upgrades for better comfort and safety for your child. The 5-point padded safety harness with easy-to-adjust shoulder straps grow with your child. The seatback is nearly 20 inches high, so that taller children fit comfortably. The buckle can be tricky to take off, but is easy to put on, it may take a few practice sessions!

The stroller has a padded seat that reclines fully. Moms love this feature because little ones fall asleep peacefully. Another mom mentioned in her review that she loves the seat because there are no sudden jerks every time she lowers the seatback down for her baby to sleep. A drawstring strap recline puts the seat at just the right angle for your child's needs.

The seatback  offers excellent support and proper posture so your child doesn't slouch. Velcro tabs pull the seat forward an additional two inches so that your child can sit more upright at snack time or to see outside.

The Baby Jogger City Mini is a popular choice for expecting parents who want to be able to put their newborn in a travel system. This lightweight stroller accommodates most major brand car seats such as:

  • Baby Jogger
  • Britax
  • Chicco
  • Cybex
  • Graco
  • Maxi Cosi
  • Nuna
  • Peg Perego

What about the fold?

Baby Jogger invented the one-handed Quick Fold technology that lots of other brands have copied over the years. In one motion, you fold up your stroller in half, leaving your other hand to hold your little one. The light weight enables you to put it in your trunk one-handed as well - super convenient.

This 30 second demo video shows you exactly how it's done:

Moms handle their babies with more confidence when the stroller is easy to fold and unfold, especially one-handed. Moms need more than two hands, after all!  The City Mini auto-locks the frame, keeping it folded for storage or transportation. The fold is the main selling features for most Baby Jogger strollers, and so many love the fold that numerous other brands have copied this type of fold since its beginning.

Sun canopy and weather protection

Baby Jogger City Mini Measurements

Folded: 33.46" x 24.21" x 12.80"
Width: 24"
Length: 43.7"
Handle height: 41"
Seatback: 20.7"
Seat to Canopy: 23½"
Seat Width: 13.5"
Seat Depth: 10"

One of the clear highlights of the City Mini is the full-coverage canopy. It now has SPF 50 right in the fabric to prevent sun damage to your baby's tender and sensitive skin.

The large, multi-position sun canopy has two clear peek-a-boo windows. I find that the coverage is just right for adequate shading and having two windows lets you peek in when the canopy is fully extended or retracted half way.

I like the weather cover at the top of the seatback. For warm days, roll up the covering that extends from the back of the canopy to the top of the seatback to reveal a mesh covering to allow for ventilation. For colder days, roll the fabric back down and Velcro it back into place for a warmer enclosure. I've always preferred these enclosures to having an open-ended seat top when reclined.

Performance and maneuverability

I love how easy this product is to maneuver and the ride is smooth, even on slightly uneven surface, such as a boardwalk or pavement. The City Mini has 8-inch front swivel wheels with sealed ball bearings - this ensures precise maneuverability, and it can be locked into place for long distance strolling.

The stroller is also lightweight, making it a solid choice for frequent travelers, particularly via air. And it also folds compact, and according to a happy mom's review, the City Mini single stroller fits in half of her Prius trunk, compared to a previous stroller which occupied the entire space.

Brakes & handle bar

Brakes are a piece of cake. One red pedal in the middle of the axle engages the brake, and flip it back up to disengage.

The rounded handle bar is comfortable to use and at 41 inches from the ground, it is at a height that is suitable for most adults to push the stroller with ease and comfort.

The Baby Jogger City Mini has a storage basket under the seat and it has stretchy sides so I can put in the bulky items like a diaper bag. Some reviews, however, have criticized the basket and these parents prefer something larger and because of the way the frame is built, getting larger items in and out can be difficult.

Another storage compartment is on the seat back facing you, as you can see from the photo above. It's basically a very large pocket  ideal for carrying those extra items you don't want to have to bend down to get in the lower basket.

Accessories galore!

This product has a patented universal accessory mounting bracket, which allows parents to add stroller accessories as needed.

I've seen many City Minis and Mini GTs with either a padded bumper bar for children to hang on to, or with a snack tray so little ones can nibble and grab a sippy cup. Either one is really nice to have and makes outings more pleasant.

Parents, if the back storage pocket isn't enough and you want a drink holder (a MUST HAVE for many!) then you'll want to get the parent console. It has a place for your drink as well as additional smaller pockets and compartments to fit your little essentials such as keys, lip balm, cell phone, little toys or pacifier. I mean the list is endless!

A rain shield protects your child not only from rain, but also really cold days and from the wind, too. What I like about the rain shield is that it zips away so that you have access to your child in and out without having to remove it. The shield is well ventilated with holes on each side so your child always has fresh air to breathe. Buy it here for around $39.

If you have an older child who doesn't need a stroller but would like a ride, try out the glider board. It is sturdy, easy to attach and kids love riding on it. It also flips up and out of the way when not in use, giving you more walking room.  The board has gotten mixed reviews, but mostly from parents with a Baby Jogger double stroller, because their child cannot stand in front of the handle bar like they can for a single, and they end up bumping their faces or mouths on the handle. If you're getting a City Mini single, though, you'll be fine.

How much should I pay for the Baby Jogger City Mini?

Right now the current model year is selling for about the same price across many different web retailers. I've seen it going for about $260, most places, and I like getting my strollers on Amazon where you have five colors to choose from. Prices change all the time and sometimes go down as the year goes on.

What others are saying

Baby Jogger City Mini reviews give this stroller an average 4½ stars. The light weight and Quick Fold are the two highlights, not to mention the style and design.

Consumer Reports also had something to say about this stroller. They gave it an overall 78% rating with very good marks for ease of use and maneuverability and a an excellent mark for safety. They like the quick fold, extra storage besides the basket and the one-touch brakes.

One mother recently said in her review that the City Mini is recommended for parents who want a product that is larger than an umbrella stroller but still doesn't take up a lot of space. She is very happy with her investment and gave her new stroller a 5-star rating.

You cannot ignore that sun canopy! Moms and dads frequently write in to say how much they love the coverage it provides. The large canopy is a favorite feature for Shannon from Massachusetts. She says she doesn't really need the wind cover because the canopy nearly covers her baby completely. She likes the two peek-a-boo windows as well.

Reviews often mention the superb maneuverability, with satisfied customers often writing they can use one hand to steer.

I've read a few reviews from parents who have owned the Baby Jogger City Mini for several years are motivated to write positive reviews about this stroller being sturdy and durable. They love the light weight, easy maneuverability and quick small fold.

The City Mini's main competitor is the Britax B-Agile. It looks nearly the same and is priced similarly.

In all the recent reviews over the past few years, the one constant complaint is about the storage basket beneath the seat not being large enough with difficulty getting stuff in and out.

Parents also wish that the stroller included a snack tray and cup holder.

Where can I buy the City Mini?

My favorite place to buy strollers is on Amazon. Sometimes you will see the price fall, so grab the opportunity while you can. I also like shopping on Amazon because I can also buy a couple of other unrelated items along with my big purchase. It's really convenient that way, and watching for the delivery van is so much fun!
