When you hear phrases like "6061 aircraft aluminum makes this stroller 20% lighter than the original Caboose" and see features like three-position seat recline and a compact size so small it weighs less than all stand-on strollers on the market today, you sit up and take notice!
Joovy may not have invented the sit and stand stroller but they have perfected the stroller and a half. More reasons the Caboose Ultralight is the best sit and stand stroller is that it is far shorter than other brands, weighs 20% less and has an enormous sun canopy that simply does not compare.
Just about everything can be customized with this stand-on stroller, from the bench to the leg rest to the seat. And this stroller is sturdy, despite the light weight. You will be astounded at the quality of the Joovy Caboose Ultralight and how much easier it can make your outings with two children.
The Joovy stroller comes with a car seat adapter and can likely take your car seat so you can turn this stroller into a travel system, enabling your older child to stand or sit and your newborn is snug and secured safely in the front seat facing you.
And now, Joovy has just come out with a new product called the Caboose Too, a second seat that you add to the bench when your older child isn't quite ready to stand up. More details about the Caboose Too in the review below, so keep reading!
I was excited to personally test and review this awesome product, and like hundreds of other parents, I was incredibly impressed. These other parent reviews have been written online across different web retailers and they consistently rate the Joovy Caboose Ultralight with an average 4½-star rating. It is utterly amazing. By the time you finish reading my review, you'll discover exactly why.
As the name suggests, the Caboose Ultralight weighs 20% less than the basic Caboose model. At only 21 pounds, it weighs far less than most double strollers. When I push the Ultralight, it maneuvers just like a single stroller, perhaps just a tad bit longer, as to be expected.
Since this product is incredibly lightweight, pushing two kids at the same time is effortless and rides are always smooth with the 4-wheel suspension system.
After testing out the Caboose Ultralight, I feel that it is the perfect tandem stroller for long distance strolls such as shopping day, taking a special day at a theme park. Because of the compact, easy fold, this stroller is ideal for errands around town that we moms always find ourselves having to do.
Some parents worry about going out with two kids in a tandem stroller because a baby and a toddler can possibly weigh more than 80 pounds total. However, this Joovy stroller is so sturdy that it allows a maximum weight of 45 pounds each for the seat and rear bench for a combined weight of 90 pounds. Both seat and bench are padded and so comfortable that your children may ask for more stroller rides!
The front seat has a 3-position recline, which is just perfect when your baby needs a nap. This is an improvement over previous years where the Ultralight had only 2 positions to recline. Even when the front seat reclines to the lowest position, your older child can still stand on the back platform.
However, if your older child is tall, just recline the front seat at the second position so that he or she can still stand comfortably at the back seat. A mom with two kids, ages 2 and 4, mentioned in a review that her girls swap seats and enjoy the strolls without any complaints.
The seat is nicely padded and the shoulder straps are easily adjustable. The seat isn't the biggest I've seen on other strollers, but it is an average size with a 16½" seatback. I like the adjustable footrest so that smaller babies have leg support when they recline for a nap. You will have to put the leg rest down every time you unfold the stroller, as this is something all Joovy strollers tend to do, but it is not a big deal.
I'm excited to tell you about a new product Joovy has come out with. It's a second seat called the Caboose Too that you add to the bench to turn your sit and stand into a tandem double, or purchase WITH the Joovy Caboose Ultralight for a special price.
See the thing with these wonderful stand-on strollers is that your older child has to be over two years old to use them, often as old as 2½ or 3. Often what happens is baby #2 arrives and your older one isn't quite mature enough for the standing platform and you have to resort to buying a full double stroller.
The Caboose Too rear seat allows your sit and stand stroller to convert to a double while your older child is growing - the seat fills that time gap. When your big kid is old enough, simply remove the Caboose Too second seat and he or she can now use the bench and platform.
This product holds up to 45 pounds and it also reclines. The seat easily installs right on top of the bench and has a five-point safety harness. The snaps connecting the arm rests are quite difficult to attach, so get somebody strong to help.
There are only two potential downfalls I see to this seat.
One is that you cannot put ANY hot drinks or drinks that could spill into your parent organizer because the organizer is inches from your child's head. Bottles and sippy cups are fine. Coffee is not.
Second, the sun canopy is about the best you can get for an older child sitting back-to-back with their younger sibling, but not for sitting single file. The canopy will not provide shade while using the Caboose Too.
Your bigger child in back also doesn't get any cup holder or place for snacks, and that might make him or her jealous of the younger sibling up front with the snack tray. Really not a big deal, but be aware. Your parent organizer does hold a sippy cup quite well though.
The Caboose Too comes in coordinating colors with either the Joovy Caboose or Joovy Caboose Ultralight strollers. The Caboose Too rear seat retails for about $60 and you can buy it separately or with the stroller.
The Joovy Caboose Ultralight folds up as compact as a single stroller and reviews claim that it can be stored easily in smaller car trunks like the Toyota Prius. While the depth of the fold is less than 10 inches, it is quite long: 45 inches. Folded with the seat adapter connected, then you need to add an additional 4½ inches, so you're looking at a folded length of 49½ inches. Keep this in mind when considering your trunk space.
Actually folding the stroller is a snap. It is a two-handed fold, though. Just collapse the canopy and put it in the most upright position. Then lock the front wheels and brakes. Then you pull up on the two red folding mechanisms just below each side of the handlebar and push forward. From there it folds up quite easily and a frame lock holds everything in place.
When going out with two children, you certainly need a big storage space for all your necessities, and the Joovy Caboose Ultralight has a larger storage basket to accommodate all your stuff. I like that I can access the basket from the rear, sides and through the top of the bench when I slide it all the way forward. Lots and lots of space!
The storage basket also comes with mesh pockets on each side, which is a convenient feature because you have extra space for your small necessities that you need quick access to. These little pockets have Velcro enclosures at the top, and that's a nice little touch because small items can sometimes easily fall out and the enclosure prevents such losses.
This stroller comes with Joovy Parent Organizer, which many moms and dads enjoy and praise. It is made of machine-washable neoprene and has a rear zippered pocket. The pocket is perfect for storing and easy access of your keys, camera, cell phone, and more.
Dual cup holders carry your drinks and the neoprene material keeps your beverage at just the right temperature. Many reviewers claim that other brands do not offer such accessory for the parents. It's nice that the Joovy provides such a good one, isn't it?
One of the features I truly love is the sun canopy. Now many sit and stand strollers only have a canopy for the child in the front. The older child, when sitting on the bench, has no canopy to protect from the sun. Joovy has thought of your older child!
An oversized canopy with a sun visor extension protects both of your kids; it is designed to protect your older child who sits on the rear bench. I really like knowing my older child is also shaded and you don't see this type of canopy on other stand-on strollers. This is a unique feature that is quite nice to have, particularly in summertime.
Each Ultralight Caboose comes with a Universal Car Seat Adapter that snaps effortlessly onto the end of the arm rests. Car seat brands that this stroller accommodate include Baby Trend, Britax, Chicco, Combi, Compass, Evenflo, Graco, Maxi Cosi, Peg Perego and Safety 1st.
The safety strap that secures your car seat in place stays in neat little pockets on either side of the seat. The stroller can be folded without taking the seat adapter off, but it will be longer, so keep this in mind when considering storage or taking it in your car.
When your baby is old enough to transition to the toddler seat, just take out the car seat adapter and replace it with the snack tray. Joovy's snack tray has two cup holders and a depression in the middle for snacks or little toys.
Linked rear brakes offer more security when it is parked, keeping your kids safe at all times. This is particularly convenient because you only have to step once, not on each side, and your stroller is fully stopped.
The Joovy official website has the Caboose Ultralight listed at a suggested retail price of $250. Looking around at different web retailers, I've noticed most charge between $20-$40 less, but you need to check how much is charged for shipping. Amazon has the lowest price I've seen online at $200-$210, depending on the color.
See my personal video review of the Joovy Caboose Ultralight.
While I personally give this stroller a 5-star review, other parents rate the Joovy Caboose Ultralight with 4½ stars for overall convenience, light weight and compact size. Don't miss a word of these fantastic testimonials.
"I love, love, love this stroller! Did I mention I love this stroller? I have an 8 month old and a 3 year old who love to get out for walks and adventures to the mall. The Caboose Ultralight has been a life saver!"
"I am a mother of a 3 year old and a 1 year old and this stroller is the perfect fit."
Several customers have taken this stroller with them on vacation.
"We got this for a trip to Europe with our almost 2 and 3½ year old boys."
"It was way light after six days at Disneyland and lots of pushing my arms never got tired."
Reviews often mention the superb maneuverability.
"This stroller is so easy to steer and is good on rugged terrain such as grass, the beach, dirt paths, etc."
I personally found that this product maneuvered quite well with kids and went over bumpy sidewalks with ease. Children find the seat and bench nice and comfortable and the snack tray does not come up too high with a 13-month-old in the seat. I am very, very pleased with the Ultralight.
There are honestly not that many negative reviews out there in relation to the positives. Some customers did have some problems with assembly and some had problems with folding. The only problem I had folding it was when I forgot to unlatch the frame lock!
Another downfall is that when you use the car seat adapter and have a car seat installed, the seat must be reclined as far as possible and the bench is uncomfortable to sit on because the older child's seat back is tilted awkwardly FORWARD.
A few reviews mentioned that after a year or so of use, the maneuverability had decreased significantly. One person commented that this is due to the build-up of dirt and debris inside the wheel and cleaning it out would make it work well again.
As with all the strollers reviewed on Stroller Envy, I like to keep a check on the prices and I generally find that Amazon consistently has the best price.
Just imagine how great you'll feel in a few days when you put together your new Joovy Caboose Ultralight and take your kids for a spin around the neighborhood.
